Jan 01, 2009 · Archaeological sites are numerous in the state indicating a population growth and exploitation of a wide range of resources and locales. Many of the Early Archaic sites have been found deeply buried in the alluvial floodplains of the major river valleys (Figure 6), camps preserved as the river bottoms built up by successive flood deposits over the millennia. In 1966, the state of Tennessee purchased 400 acres of the Chumbley estate as the core of what is now Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park. The park is home to an abundance of activities for guests to enjoy. The main hiking trail follows the wall of Old Stone Fort which was used by the Native Americans as a ceremonial gathering place. The Oak Ridge Reservation area is rich in archaeological resources, both prehistoric and historic. Preservation of these resources is mandated by several pieces of federal legislation and by the Tennessee Natural Areas Preservation Act of 1971.
The archaeological program at The University of Tennessee began in 1934. In the preceding year, Congress has created the Tennessee Valley Authority and concerned parties, including the University of Tennessee had met to address solutions to the potential loss of archaeological sites within the planned reservoirs.
Most Early Archaic sites located in high, upland areas produced a wide range of tools reflecting hunting, butchering, hide working, and woodworking. Early Archaic groups established only temporary camps in the rugged Appalachian Summit region, while maintaining more permanent base camps in the Ridge and Valley province of east Tennessee.
